Japan To Cosponsor Resolution To Explain Use Of Un Security Council Veto
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says the country will cosponsor a draft resolution that would require the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to explain decisions when they exercise their veto power.
The move is being led by Liechtenstein in response to a Russian veto in February. Russia blocked a Security Council resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of its forces from Ukraine.
The draft resolution requires the General Assembly to meet after a permanent member casts a veto in the Security Council. The draft could be submitted to the General Assembly next week.
Kishida on Thursday met senior officials of his main ruling Liberal Democratic Party and explained that Japan will be a cosponsor of the draft resolution.
He said it is part of his government's efforts to help make the United Nations function better.
Sato Masahisa, who heads the LDP's foreign affairs division, talked to reporters after meeting with Kishida. Sato said that the LDP will work closely with the government in deliberating UN reform measures.
