Kishida Cabinet Approval Rate Unchanged At 53%


Kishida Cabinet approval rate unchanged at 53%

An NHK opinion poll shows that the approval rate for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's Cabinet stands at 53 percent, unchanged from the previous survey last month. The disapproval rate is 23 percent, down 2 points.

NHK conducted the telephone survey from Friday through Sunday. Over 1,200 people responded.

Among respondents who expressed support for the Cabinet, 42 percent said it seems better than other possible lineups, while 19 percent said the Cabinet is made up of people from political parties they support. Another 16 percent said they trust Kishida.

Of those expressing a negative view of the Cabinet, 38 percent said they don't expect much from its policies while 29 percent said it lacks the ability to implement policies.

Meanwhile,15 percent said it's not comprised of people from political parties they support.

NHK questioned respondents on their assessment of the government's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Thirteen percent said they rate the government's response highly, while 59 percent expressed support to some degree. But 16 percent said they don't rate the response highly, and 5 percent said they do not have a positive view of it at all.

With regard to the sanctions the government has imposed on Russia, 35 percent called them adequate, while 47 percent said more should be done. Seven percent said the sanctions were too harsh.

Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa visited Poland early this month to offer support for evacuees from Ukraine. During the visit he arranged for 20 Ukrainians to fly to Japan on a government plane.

When asked how they view such efforts, 25 percent of respondents said they regarded the move highly, while 51 percent expressed support to a certain degree. Fifteen percent said they don't think highly of the move, while 3 percent said they don't support it at all.

The government plans to reduce its energy dependence on Russia, which critics say may result in a rise in energy prices. When asked if they support this initiative despite the consequences, 68 percent replied favorably while 17 percent responded negatively.
