Masters defending champion Matsuyama hoping for 2nd straight victory

The defending champion of the upcoming Masters golf tournament, Matsuyama Hideki, has expressed hope to win the tournament this year.

The Masters opens at Augusta National Golf Club in the US state of Georgia on Thursday.

Matsuyama won the Masters last year, becoming the first Japanese man to win a major golf championship.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Matsuyama said that as defending champion, he has a chance to win a second consecutive time.

Matsuyama also attended an official news conference and talked about his condition. He has been suffering from a neck injury. He said he does not know how it is now, because he has not swung fully lately. He added that he feels that he is in not-so-bad shape.

Later on Tuesday, Matsuyama hosted the Champions Dinner with defending champions.

At the news conference, five-time champion Tiger Woods, who suffered serious injuries in a car accident in February last year, expressed his intention to take part in the competition.
