Princess Aiko turns 19

Princess Aiko, the daughter of Japan's Emperor and Empress, turned 19 on Tuesday.

The princess enrolled in Gakushuin University in April.

The Imperial Household Agency says she has been attending online classes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The princess, who is studying subjects like Japanese literature, has also been taking language lessons in English and Spanish.

Princess Aiko watched on TV a set of ceremonies in which her uncle Crown Prince Akishino was proclaimed as the heir to the throne last month.

She also watched how the Emperor and Empress carefully prepare for events and how the couple are fulfilling their duties.

The agency says through these experiences, she is learning more about the Imperial family and what is expected of her as she comes of age next year.
