TOKYO — Panasonic Corp said on Tuesday it expects its battery business supplying Tesla to be profitable this fiscal year, and raised its full-year operating profit forecast by more than half.
After several years of production troubles and delays at Tesla, Panasonic is beginning to see its decade-old partnership with the U.S. company become a profit driver.
Nissan is thinking about EVs and their impact on the environment down the line. The automaker believes, though, that the batteries that make up the lion’s share of their carbon cost can be reused in a number of applications.
Ford and Google have announced a strategic six-year partnership today that will help the carmaker accelerate its transformation plan and "reinvent connected vehicle experience".
Japan's kei cars, known for their affordability and small engines, face a potentially existential threat as the country leans on automakers to go electric as part of its net-zero emissions goal.
Kei means "light" in Japanese, and the category makes up about a third of new domestic automobile sales. They're a popular means of transportation outside of major cities, used by farmers and families that need multiple vehicles to get around. Cheap to buy and own, keis are mainly manufactured for the home market, with engines limited by law to 660 cubic centimeters (40 cubic inches).
Back in September, we wrote about a bizarre Toyota Camry that resided in Georgetown, Indiana and had been adorned with some very weird ‘modifications.' It has now been listed on Facebook Marketplace and is looking for a new home.
Ford is partnering with Google in a big way to bring Android software to its in-car tech. Google will be helping Ford in a number of ways, but the most impactful news for end users is that future Ford and Lincoln vehicles will have Android-powered infotainment systems with Google apps built into the user interface.
That means Google Maps will be the vehicle's native navigation system. Google Assistant will be the voice assistant. And Google Play will be on board with its mountain of apps to choose from for listening to music, podcasts and audiobooks. Thank Google's open-source Android Automotive software for making this possible.

Both the 2022 Nissan Frontier and 2022 Nissan Pathfinder will be revealed this week, on Thursday, February 4. We got a Pathfinder teaser late last week, and now Nissan is doing the same with the Frontier.
There isn't a whole lot to go off, but we get quick glimpses of the grille, rear fender, and upper cab in the quick six-second video. The grille is the most intriguing bit to look at. It's all blacked-out with thick criss-crosses and two horizontal bars going through the center. Nissan's new logo is displayed prominently in the upper part of the grille. Curiously, it's not directly in the center, as Nissan is opting to position it at the top. We'll note that this particular truck is a PRO-4X model, so the grille could be different from the other trims. The Nissan logo itself will certainly have different coloring, as the red accents within it are exclusive to PRO-4X trucks.
February 4 is set to be a big day for Nissan. The automaker will be revealing both the Pathfinder, which was teased on Friday, and the Frontier, which it is previewing today.
The Dodge Viper and Toyota Supra are two very different animals in many ways: American vs. Japanese, big displacement vs. small displacement, V10 vs. inline-six, the list goes on. On the other hand, they have their similarities as well. Both are front-engine, rear wheel drive coupes, and in the case of this video, they are both making obscene amounts of power.
There's no shortage of strong competitors in the compact car segment, meaning a car needs to make a case for itself to stand out. The 2021 Toyota Corolla does this by offering an impressive amount of variety and standard safety features, while also being stylish and a solid if not remarkable driver.
The Corolla is available as a hatchback or sedan, with a pair of gas engines and a hybrid powertrain, and it's even available with a manual transmission for diehards. Its main weakness is that there aren't really any versions that are particularly quick or fun to drive, such as the peppy variants from Honda, Mazda, Hyundai and Kia. You also won't find all-wheel-drive versions like Subaru and Mazda offer. But as a sensible, feature-packed commuter with a sterling reputation for variety, it's easy to see why the Corolla continues to be so popular. That's it's no longer as dull as it once was is icing on the cake.
Lexus will start writing the next chapter in its 32-year history when it unveils a mysterious concept car in spring 2021. It hasn't revealed the design study's name yet, but it explained the model will show what's coming.
Koji Sato, the company's president and chief branding officer, noted that the concept "illustrates our intentions for the future, and marks the beginning of the next generation of Lexus." He stopped short of providing additional details, but the company's plans for the future are fairly easy to decipher. Lexus isn't going to start making rifles, lawn mowers, or garage flooring; it's very likely going to electrify its range while reinventing its design language for the 2020s and adding more technology — including advanced semi-automated systems — to its cars.
