Japan's health ministry says 8,021 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Tokyo on Saturday.

The tally increased by 54 from the same day last week and the eighth straight day with a week-on-week increase.

The number of seriously ill patients in the capital on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was unchanged from the previous day at 20.

Authorities confirmed eight deaths linked to the coronavirus.
