ANA to resume normal operation for Haneda flights this summer

All Nippon Airways says it will resume normal operations for its domestic flights to and from Tokyo's Haneda Airport this summer.

The Japanese carrier, also known as ANA, says operations will return to normal in July and August, without a reduction in the number of the flights due to the coronavirus pandemic. The normal service will be available for the first time in more than two years.

Hibakusha protest 'reversal' of moves to abolish nuclear weapons

A group of survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Japan has protested moves in the world that it says are going counter to the efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.

About 50 people gathered at a general meeting of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, or Nihon Hidankyo, in Tokyo. The two-day meeting ended on Thursday.

Japan's largest opposition Constitutional Democratic Party has submitted no-confidence motions against the Cabinet of Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and the Lower House Speaker Hosoda Hiroyuki.

Party leader Izumi Kenta told reporters on Wednesday that the government has not taken any action against soaring prices. He said it cannot protect people's lives or restore Japan's economy.

The Japanese government is planning to have the former residents of four Russian-controlled islands hold memorials at sea, as visits to the islands have been canceled, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Japan claims the four islands, which it calls the Northern Territories. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

13 More Japanese universities to accept Ukrainian students

A Japanese refugee support group says it has made arrangements with 13 universities in the country to accept students from Ukraine, adding to its list of such institutions.

The group, called Pathways Japan, is already helping Ukrainian students to secure places at the International Christian University, Sophia University and at Japanese language schools.

Real wages in Japan shrank in April

Government data for April painted a discouraging picture for Japanese households. Figures showed workers made slightly more than in the same month a year earlier, but that in real terms their wages were down.

A labor ministry survey of more than 30,000 businesses with five or more employees found that workers earned an average of more than 283,000 yen, or about 2,140 dollars, for the month. That's up 1.7 percent in yen terms from a year earlier. The increase was largely due to overtime.

Evacuated Ukrainian students start studying Japanese

Ukrainian university students who fled to Japan to escape Russia's invasion have started learning Japanese.

Ten students from establishments including the Lviv Polytechnic National University in western Ukraine arrived in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, last month. They are being assisted by a Japanese language school in the prefectural capital Maebashi City.

Evacuation order lifted in part of Fukushima 'difficult-to-return' zone

Residents of part of a district near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant designated as a "difficult-to-return" zone have been allowed back in for the first time since the 2011 disaster.

A total of more than 300 square kilometers of land in seven municipalities of Fukushima Prefecture is still designated as a "difficult-to-return" zone.
