Lawyers: Ex-Unification Church got mil. of dollars despite 'stricter compliance'

An association of lawyers in Japan says the religious group formerly known as the Unification Church received donations worth millions of dollars even after it says it stepped up compliance measures.

The National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales, which provides support to former followers of the group, held a meeting in Tokyo on Friday. About 100 people attended.

Weather officials in Japan say a large and powerful typhoon is expected to approach Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture through Saturday, and to near the Kyushu region on Sunday.

Typhoon Nanmadol may affect many regions, especially during the upcoming three-day weekend through Monday. It is expected to travel through eastern and northern Japan through Tuesday. The Meteorological Agency is urging people across the country to brace for it.

Japan ordered to pay damages over death of detained Cameroon man

A Japanese court has ordered the government to pay damages over the death of a Cameroonian man who complained of ill health while being detained at an immigration center north of Tokyo.

The Mito District Court ruled on Friday that the center's staff was negligent in the case and ordered the government to pay damages worth 1.65 million yen, or about 11,500 dollars, to the plaintiff, who is his mother.

JR Kyushu unveils new sightseeing train

A railway operator on Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu has unveiled a new sightseeing train.

Kyushu Railway calls the train service "Futatsuboshi 4047." Futatsuboshi means "two stars" in Japanese. The company says it's a reference to the attractiveness of the prefectures of Saga and Nagasaki that the train will travel through. The service starts next Friday to coincide with the launch of a new bullet-train line in western Kyushu.

A Japanese construction company has tested its latest earthquake damper technology for skyscrapers with a device installed in the upper floors of a building model.

In the March 2011 earthquake that hit eastern Japan, shakings called long-period ground motion swayed ultra-high-rise buildings far from the epicenter, including Tokyo and even in distant Osaka. The prolonged swaying caused damage to ceilings and walls of numerous high-rises.

A giant panda at a zoo in western Japan marked a landmark birthday this week turning 30 years old, or 90 in human years.

Eimei is not the oldest giant panda in the world, but Wakayama Prefecture's Adventure World says he is the oldest to have naturally fathered cubs while in captivity -- a feat he's accomplished sixteen times.

Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Nanmadol has formed over the sea south of Japan. They say it is expected to approach the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa and southern Kyushu and Shikoku.

The Meteorological Agency says a tropical depression developed into the tropical storm at 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Japan's Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Naruhito will become the second Japanese Emperor to attend a funeral for a foreign royal family member or head of state, when he takes part in the ceremony for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II next week.

The agency says Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko attended the state funeral for Belgium's King Baudouin in 1993. They were the Emperor and Empress at that time.

Police in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, are investigating last week's death of a 3-year-old girl from heatstroke when she was left in a school bus, by reenacting the scene.

The girl, who arrived at a nursery school in Makinohara City on board the bus on the morning of September 5, was left inside the bus for about five hours from around 9 a.m., with none of the school staff noticing the situation.
