Former Malaysian Pm Pays Respects At Abe's Residence In Tokyo
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has made a visit of condolence to the home of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who was shot dead last Friday.
Mahathir visited Abe's residence in central Tokyo on Friday afternoon. He met with Abe's widow, Akie, and expressed his condolences on Abe's death.
The 97-year-old politician reportedly arrived in Japan from South Korea, which he had been visiting.
Later, Mahathir told reporters that Abe was his special friend and the two leaders had many discussions on developing Malaysia and Japan. He said he can't forget Abe's devoted efforts to improve bilateral ties.
Mahathir initiated the Look East policy to encourage Malaysians to learn from Japan's industrial technology and work ethic.
After he was sworn in again as prime minister in 2018, Mahathir made Japan his first overseas destination and held talks with Abe, who was then Japan's prime minister.
In March of this year, Abe visited Malaysia on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Look East policy.
