Fukushima Business Group Delivers Donations To Ukraine Embassy In Tokyo
A women's business group in Japan's Fukushima Prefecture has collected donations to support people in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
Seven members of Fukushima women's federation of commerce and industry societies delivered the money to the Ukrainian embassy in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The women say they raised more than 1.2 million yen, or about 8,700 dollars, over one month, by setting up donation boxes at shops and event sites in the prefecture.
They say they want to support people in Ukraine, as their group participated in exchange projects with them after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, including a visit to the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine.
The head of the federation, Nihei Emiko, handed a list of the donations to the Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan, Sergiy Korsunsky, who thanked the group for the assistance.
Nihei told NHK that federation members have wanted to do something for the people in Ukraine as close friends.
She says the group's exchanges with Ukrainians make its members feel the war in Ukraine is close to home and not something happening in a distant country. She says they are praying for an early end to the conflict.
