Italian Dies In Apparent Suicide At Tokyo Immigration Facility
Japan's Immigration Services Agency says an Italian who was being detained at a facility in Tokyo has apparently committed suicide.
Officials say the man in his 50s was found unconscious in his room at around 7:20 a.m. on Friday. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Facility staff reportedly confirmed that he was standing up between 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. that morning. They believe he used a TV power cord to take his own life.
The man had been detained at the facility since October 25. No suicide note has been found.
Seventeen foreigners have died due to illness or suicide at Japanese immigration detention facilities since 2007.
The United Nations Human Rights Committee issued a report earlier this month urging the country to improve the way detainees are treated.
