Japan Official Hints At Studying Nuclear Shelters In Defense Posture Review

A senior government official has indicated that Japan is considering installing nuclear shelters in its ongoing review of the country's defense capabilities. The move comes as North Korea is accelerating its nuclear and missile development.
The government has been designating structures across Japan that can serve as emergency shelters in the event of a ballistic missiles attack.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters on Tuesday that in view of North Korea's recent moves, the government believes it necessary to take concrete steps in bracing for nuclear and other attacks.
Japan is in the process of revising three key defense documents, including the National Security Strategy. The review is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Matsuno indicated that discussions on the topic include studies of overseas examples.
