Japanese Airlines Step Up Efforts To Cut Co2 Emissions

Japanese airlines step up efforts to cut CO2 emissions

New global targets for international passenger flights to achieve net-zero carbon emissions are prompting Japanese airlines to speed up efforts to cut their carbon footprint.

The International Civil Aviation Organization which sets rules for civilian aircraft, adopted the goals at its general assembly earlier this month.

They include a 15-percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from international flights compared to 2019 levels by as early as 2024. Member states also committed to aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Japanese carriers are introducing more fuel-efficient planes and streamlining aircraft operations. They also plan to use emissions trading to help them meet the targets.

Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, which is mainly made from biomass or waste oil, can reduce emissions.

But global production of SAF was equivalent to just 0.03 percent of total aviation fuel consumption in 2020.

Reports say Japanese companies will begin large-scale production of the alternative fuel as early as 2025.
