Japanese Universities Down In Global Top 100 Rankings
Top Japanese universities have fallen in global rankings compiled by a British journal.
The Times Higher Education's annual World University Rankings are based on performance indicators such as research content, number of citations in published works and international outlook.
In the latest rankings, the University of Tokyo is 39th, down four places from the previous year, while Kyoto University is at 68th, down seven.
By country and region, the largest number of institutions in the top 100 is 34, in the United States. China has seven, Hong Kong five, South Korea three, and Japan and Singapore two each.
The University of Oxford in Britain tops the list for a seventh straight year, followed by Harvard University in the US. Britain's University of Cambridge and Stanford University in the US share third place. The top 10 are all in Britain and the US.
Among Asian institutions, China's Tsinghua University took the highest spot at 16th, followed by Peking University, also in China, at 17th and the National University of Singapore at 19th.
Five of the seven Chinese institutions in the top 100 improved their positions. The Times Higher Education says China is steadily catching up to the US in research quality.
