Japan's Police Chief Vows Full Security For 2023 G7 Summit In Hiroshima

Japan's police chief vows full security for 2023 G7 summit in Hiroshima

Japan's police chief has stated that security should be fully ensured at next year's Group of Seven summit. The meeting comes amid heightened concerns over terrorism and cyberattacks.

The summit is to be held in Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan from May 19 through 21.

The National Police Agency on Wednesday held a meeting of senior security and cyber affairs officials.

NPA Commissioner General Tsuyuki Yasuhiro told participants that it is essential for the host nation to ensure the safety of the foreign dignitaries at the summit. He said he hopes the police will learn from past lessons and conduct practical training to achieve this goal.

It will be the first time for Japan's police to provide security for a large-scale occasion such as the summit based on the revised VIP security guidelines. The rules were overhauled after the fatal shooting in July of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

The NPA plans to produce a detailed security plan by analyzing potential risks of the areas near the venue.

The participants at the meeting also vowed to maintain security for shopping malls and amusement parks in other parts of Japan. They hope to gain the public's understanding and cooperation about the tighter restrictions before and during the summit.
