Ministers Meet In Tokyo To Discuss Emissions Cuts
Ministers from around the world are meeting in Japan to talk about collaborative efforts to cut carbon emissions.
Representatives from more than 20 countries attended a meeting on Monday, the first day of Tokyo Green Transformation Week.
Many attended in person. Some took part online.
Japan's industry minister Nishimura Yasutoshi warned that abandoning fossil fuels too quickly could have heavy social and economic costs. He said the world needs to invest more in the transition process.
Nishimura said, "Japan recognizes the importance of funding transition technologies that include hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon dioxide capture technology to reduce the carbon footprint of thermal power generation."
A group of over 20 financial institutions from around the world proposed international lending guidelines. They say coal-fired thermal power plants should still be able to get loans, but only if they can show they're not harming the surrounding environment.
