Power Supply Warning Remains In Place In Tokyo Region

Japanese authorities are asking people in the Tokyo region to continue saving electricity in order to avoid a mass power outage.
The supply shortage warning will reportedly remain in effect for a second day on Wednesday. A warning issued in the northeastern region of Tohoku was lifted late on Tuesday.
The alerts were issued after a powerful earthquake knocked out several power plants last week. The plants provide power to areas that are served by the Tokyo and Tohoku electric power companies.
An unseasonal cold snap compounded the problem by pushing up the demand for heat.
Government officials say the Tokyo region averted a large-scale power outage on Tuesday. They say that was thanks to power-saving efforts and additional supplies offered by other regional utilities.
But the officials say capacity will remain tight on Wednesday, due to low morning temperatures. They are asking households and businesses to keep up efforts to reduce their usage of electricity.
