Precautions Against Heatstroke Advised Across Japan

Precautions against heatstroke advised across Japan

Wide areas from northeastern to western Japan are expected to have another day of extreme heat on Monday with temperatures rising to 38 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The Meteorological Agency says daytime temperatures will likely reach as high as 38 degrees in the western Japanese cities of Tottori, Matsue, Toyooka, Kyoto and Fukui.

The mercury is expected to reach 37 degrees in the cities of Hita and Otsu, as well as Kumagaya and Maebashi.

Daytime highs of 36 degrees are forecast for Fukuoka, Matsuyama and Nagoya, and 35 degrees for central Tokyo, Osaka City and Hiroshima City.

Heatstroke alerts have been issued for prefectures from eastern to southern Japan, including Okinawa.

People are advised to avoid unnecessary outings during the day. They are also being urged to use air conditioning as necessary and to remove masks when outdoors, where the risk of coronavirus infection is low.

Damp air from a tropical storm, which is moving north in the East China Sea, and a high-pressure system in the Pacific, are causing unstable atmospheric conditions in wide areas.

Some parts of the Kanto-Koshin region could have torrential rain of more than 50 millimeters per hour with thunder.

The Meteorological Agency is calling on people to be on the alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning strikes, gusty winds and tornadoes.

People in southern Kyushu and the Amami region are advised to take precautions against strong winds and high waves.
