Security is being tightened around the venue of the state funeral of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. The funeral will take place at Nippon Budokan in central Tokyo on Tuesday.
Tokyo police have deployed tens of thousands of officers around the hall and elsewhere.
Members of a water rescue team searched a nearby palace moat for suspicious objects.
Police officers were seen opening every manhole in the area to check for abnormalities.
An altar where the public can offer flowers is being set up in a park north of the venue. Police officers and private security personnel have been mobilized there.
The Kitanomaru Garden at the venue will be closed to the public between 5 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Tuesday.
