Survey: 200 Evacuees From Ukraine Seek Education In Japan
A Japanese government survey showed that 200 people who evacuated to Japan following Russia's invasion of Ukraine are either attending or trying to attend schools, kindergartens and universities across the country.
The education ministry surveyed educational boards and other relevant institutions in Japan.
As of last Wednesday, 44 evacuees are already attending preschools or elementary, junior high or high schools. At least 50 others have consulted with local public schools and kindergartens.
The survey also says that 27 universities have accepted 106 students or researchers from Ukraine.
The ministry notified local educational boards and others last month to ensure that school-age evacuees will receive a full education.
It instructed schools to flexibly make use of financial assistance programs for lunches and supplies, as well as high school exemption programs for tuition.
The ministry also plans to enhance support for Japanese language education.
