Thousands Of Cat Figurines Beckon Visitors To Ise, Japan
A city in central Japan is counting on a well-known figure of a friendly cat to attract visitors.
Ise holds an annual event at the Okage Yokocho shopping alley near the city's famous shrine.
On display are about 5,000 of the figurines, called "Maneki-neko." They are the work of about 40 artists.
Maneki-neko first appeared during Japan's Edo era, about 150 years ago. Cats with their right paw raised are said to bring financial luck. The left paw up is to invite people.
Maneki-neko are today found in many kinds of businesses, especially restaurants and gift shops.
The most expensive item at the event in Ise fetched 6.6 million yen, or nearly 46,000 dollars.
Visitors can also paint versions made of traditional Japanese "washi" paper with the color of their choice.
The event's organizer says people also have the chance to watch the creators at work.
The event runs until Thursday.
