Torrential Rain Lashes Southern Kyushu

Torrential rain lashes southern Kyushu

Developed rain clouds are covering southern Kyushu and bringing intermittent downpours to the region.

The ground has been loosened by the heavy rainfalls that have been lashing the region since last week. With more rain expected on Wednesday morning, weather officials are advising residents to be on high alert, as landslides may occur and rivers may flood.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says a weather front near Kyushu caused developed rain clouds to flow into the south of the region starting early on Wednesday morning. In the hour through 8:00 a.m., 50 millimeters of rain was registered in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture, while 48 millimeters of rain was recorded in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture.

Landslide alerts have been issued in some parts of Miyazaki Prefecture, due to heightened risks.

Hourly precipitation of 50 millimeters or more is forecast for Wednesday morning in southern Kyushu. Up to 120 millimeters of rain is forecast for the 24-hour period through Thursday morning in southern and northern Kyushu.

The weather agency is warning of landslides, floods in low-lying areas and swollen rivers. It is also urging people to be on the alert for lightning strikes and strong gusts of wind.
