Ukraine Lawmakers Seek Japan's Support For Restoring Infrastructure

Ukrainian lawmakers have asked Japan to provide support for a recovery of power generation and other infrastructure in their country.
A Ukrainian parliamentary delegation has been in Japan since Saturday. On Wednesday, the delegates met with Yamada Junichi, executive senior vice president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA.
Yamada told reporters after the meeting that the Ukrainian delegates pointed out the Russian military's continued attacks on the capital, Kyiv, and elsewhere have seriously damaged power plants and other infrastructure. He said they called for Japan's support in rebuilding it.
Yamada said he told the delegation that JICA will likely be able to offer help as it has been involved in power plant and other projects in developing countries.
Yamada said JICA wants to provide as much support as possible, using the experience of the recovery from the 2011 massive earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern Japan.
Ukrainian lawmaker Galyna Mykhailiuk, who heads the delegation, said a severe winter is coming soon in her country and citizens may die if they have no heating, electricity or water.
She also said she is happy that both sides share a common understanding on the issues Ukrainians face. She expressed hope that Japan's support will take shape at an early date.
