Olympic Official: Organizers Committed To Safety
A Tokyo Olympic official has said the organizers of the Games are committed to making them safe and reliable for people in the city and Japan amid a recent surge of coronavirus cases in the capital.
Tokyo marked a record-high 2,848 new infection cases on Tuesday.
At a news conference on Wednesday, organizing committee spokesperson Takaya Masanori told reporters he was sorry to hear about the rise. He added that he believes experts are extensively discussing the issue of a possible link between the surge and the Games at open forums.
Takaya also said infections of people related to the Games have been contained through repeated testing and restrictions on their activities.
IOC spokesperson Mark Adams also stressed that the separation between those involved in the Games and the general population is very intense. He said people taking part in the Games have been fully vaccinated, and the rate of people testing positive for the virus is low.
