Two Athletes Test Positive At Olympic Village
The organizing committee for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics announced that two athletes from overseas who have been staying at the Olympic Village in the Japanese capital have tested positive for the coronavirus.
They are the first athletes to test positive for the virus at the Olympic Village, which opened last Tuesday.
The committee said on Sunday that the two athletes, who are in a 14-day isolation period after arriving in Japan, tested positive on Saturday. It did not disclose which country or territory they are from.
The committee said another athlete from abroad, who has not entered the Olympic Village, also tested positive for the virus.
The committee said seven non-athletes from abroad also tested positive for the virus. It said they are five people related to the Games, one member of the media, and one contract worker.
In total, the committee announced 10 confirmed cases on Sunday, the highest daily count since it started releasing such data on July 1.
The latest figure brings the aggregate tally of confirmed cases announced by the committee to 55.
