Japan's economy shrank in the July-September period, according to the latest GDP figures released on Tuesday. It was the first contraction in four quarters.

The Cabinet Office says the economy contracted in the latest quarter from the previous one at an annualized rate of 1.2 percent in real terms.

The mother of Yokota Megumi, who was abducted by North Korea more than four decades ago, has long been calling for the immediate return of her daughter.

Tuesday marks 45 years since the abduction. Megumi was taken on November 15, 1977, while on her way home from junior high school in the city of Niigata.
