Japan's longest-serving prime minister is being remembered for his life's work and his tragic death. Former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo was gunned down during an election campaign speech in July. Thousands gathered in Tokyo on Tuesday to mourn.

Members of the Imperial Family and lawmakers from across Japan joined the leaders of all three branches of government for the state funeral. About 700 foreign representatives also attended.

People in Japan are bidding a final farewell to the country's longest-serving prime minister at his state funeral. Abe Shinzo was shot and killed during a political rally in July.

More than 4,000 people have gathered at the Nippon Budokan arena in central Tokyo. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, along with the heads of the Upper and Lower Houses, as well as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are attending. Former Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide is due to deliver a eulogy on behalf of Abe's friends.

Tuesday's ceremony for Abe Shinzo is the second state funeral for a former prime minister in Japan's postwar history, following one for Yoshida Shigeru in 1967.

Yoshida's state funeral was held on October 31 of that year, 11 days after his death. It also took place at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan, and was aired live on TV.

Major fast food chains in Japan are raising their prices to deal with the yen's sharp depreciation and the soaring cost of ingredients.

McDonald's Japan will increase its prices across the board from September 30. The price of a plain hamburger will increase by 15 percent to 150 yen, the equivalent of about a dollar. It will be the second time this year that the company has raised prices.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said the Japanese diplomat alleged of espionage has never been engaged in what Russian authorities call illegal activities. He added that the diplomat will leave Russia for Japan on Wednesday at the latest.

The Russian government declared the diplomat with the Japanese Consulate General in Vladivostok in the Russian Far East as persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country. The diplomat had been detained at one time.

A private-sector estimate puts Japan's recent intervention in the currency market at more than 3 trillion yen, or over 20 billion dollars.

The government and the Bank of Japan stepped into the market last Thursday to buy the yen and sell the dollar in a bid to stop the rapid fall of the Japanese currency.
