Atomic-bomb survivors and NGOs have stated their demands to Japan's government ahead of a review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Kishida Fumio will be the first Japanese prime minister to attend the conference that will be held next month at the UN headquarters in New York. Atomic-bomb survivors, or hibakusha, will also speak at the meeting.

Coast Guard officials said the incident happened on Tuesday morning during an inspection of the 20-millimeter-caliber autocannon mounted near the bow of the patrol vessel Shimoji. The ship was anchored at Port Nagayama on Irabu Island in the prefecture.

Japanese astronaut Wakata Koichi has paid a courtesy visit to Japan's science minister and told him that he is excited and determined to head to the International Space Station in September.

Wakata, who is temporarily back in Japan after training in the United States, is heading to the ISS on a private US spacecraft in September. The mission would be his fifth, a record for Japanese astronauts.
