NHK poll: Kishida Cabinet approval rating climbs to 59%

An NHK poll shows that the approval rating for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's Cabinet is at 59 percent, up 5 percentage points from the previous survey carried out a week before the July 10 Upper House election. The disapproval rating went down 6 points, to 21 percent.

NHK conducted the telephone survey from Saturday to Monday. More than 1,200 people responded.

The suspect, 41-year-old Yamagami Tetsuya, is believed to have sent a letter detailing grudges against a certain religious organization to a man living in Shimane Prefecture.

Figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru to retire from competition, turn pro

One of Japan's greatest figure skaters is turning pro. Hanyu Yuzuru will retire from competition, keeping his back-to-back Olympic golds from the Sochi and PyeongChang Games.

Hanyu said, "I have no intention of taking part in competitions from now on. With what I've done up to this point, I think I have accomplished what I needed to accomplish in competitions and seen results. I no longer feel like I want to be evaluated in that way."

Downpours hit western to central Japan

Japanese weather officials say heavy downpours have hit from the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan through the Tokai region in central Japan. They warn of more heavy rain there and through northeastern Japan.

Meteorological agency officials say rainclouds developed over parts of Kyushu as well as the Kinki region in western Japan due to a low-pressure system and a rain front.

Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa says Japan will watch closely to see if South Korea can produce an acceptable solution to settle the issue of lawsuits filed against Japanese companies over wartime labor.

Hayashi spoke to reporters on Tuesday, one day after he and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin met in Tokyo and agreed to seek an early solution to the issue.

Officials say bands of active rain clouds formed over Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Saga and Oita prefectures, bringing heavy rain from late Monday through Tuesday morning.
