A UNESCO advisory body has welcomed a local government proposal for a new railway for Mount Fuji, a World Heritage site in central Japan.

The highest peak in Japan was registered as a World Heritage site in 2013. It straddles the central Japanese prefectures of Shizuoka and Yamanashi.

Ex-Japanese health minister to be named new economic revitalization minister

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has decided to appoint former Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Goto Shigeyuki as the new economic revitalization minister. He will succeed Yamagiwa Daishiro, who stepped down on Monday amid a series of revelations about his links with the controversial religious group previously known as the Unification Church.

Goto is a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He currently serves as chairperson of the party's Research Commission on Social Security System.

Expert panel to convene to prepare for probe into former Unification Church

The Japanese government is set to convene a meeting of an expert panel to define the criteria for authorities to exercise the "right to ask questions" about religious groups.

The move comes after Prime Minister Kishida Fumio earlier this month ordered the education and culture minister, Nagaoka Keiko, to open a probe into the former Unification Church based on the right to ask questions under the Religious Corporations Act.

Temperatures in eastern Japan are forecast to fall on Tuesday to levels usually seen between mid-November and early December.

It was a chilly day on Monday, especially in the eastern parts of the country, due to an influx of cold air. Daytime highs were 12.3 degrees in the city of Nagano, 15.7 in Sendai, 16.5 in Matsue, 16.8 in the city of Niigata, and 17.2 in central Tokyo.
