Ukrainian lawmakers seek Japanese expertise for postwar reconstruction

Ukrainian parliamentary delegates have wrapped up their visit to Japan with a pledge to use what they have learned in Japan to rebuild their country after the war.

The parliamentarians arrived in Japan on October 15 for the first time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February. They met Japanese lawmakers and government officials during their 12-day stay.

University in Tokyo feels impact of weak yen

Higher electricity rates and a weaker yen are forcing a university in Tokyo to cut services on its campus.

Tokyo Denki University's campus in the capital has about 7,000 students. Officials say its electricity bills for this fiscal year are expected to reach more than 2.1 million dollars. That's nearly double the average, as costs of fuel used at power plants have risen, mainly due to the weaker Japanese currency.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Tuesday named a replacement for his Economic Revitalization Minister. Yamagiwa Daishiro resigned Monday after heated opposition criticism for his links to the religious group formerly known as the Unification Church.

It had been revealed that he attended multiple meetings of the church and related organizations and met at least twice with the widow of the church's founder.

Japanese govt. to present criteria for inquiry into ex-Unification Church

Japan's education and culture ministry is set to present early next month the direction of the criteria to exercise the right to ask questions of the religious group previously known as the Unification Church.

The ministry on Tuesday convened the first meeting of experts to discuss a probe instructed by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio into the group's shady sales practices and soliciting of huge donations. The roughly 20 participants included university professors and senior members of religious organizations.

Nidec posts record sales, net profit amid weak yen

Japanese electronics parts maker Nidec posted record sales and net profit in the first half of the fiscal year as the yen weakened.

Nidec says its group sales in the April-to-September period came to 1.13 trillion yen, or about 7.6 billion dollars, which is up 24 percent in yen terms from the same period last year.
