NHK poll: Over 30% want Olympics canceled

More than 30 percent of respondents to an NHK opinion poll have said next year's Olympics and Paralympics should be canceled.

The telephone survey was conducted over the weekend. More than 1,200 people answered the questions.

The respondents were asked whether they think the Olympic and Paralympic Games should be held in 2021.

Twenty-seven percent of them said the Games should be staged, 32 percent said they should be canceled, and 31 percent said they should be postponed further.

In a poll conducted in October, 40 percent of respondents said the Games should be held, 23 percent said they should be canceled, and 25 percent said they should be postponed.

They were also asked what they think of explanations given by former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo over annual parties held for his supporters.

Abe's supporters gathered for parties at Tokyo hotels on the eve of his annual cherry blossom viewing events. Investigations by prosecutors are underway into the parties' expenditures.

Two percent of them said they found Abe's explanations very convincing, while 11 percent said they were somewhat convincing. Thirty-three percent said his explanations were not too convincing, and 45 percent said they were not convincing at all.
